an example of prejudice, to kill a mockingbird

I can remember watching to kill a mockingbird in my English comp class. This movie has stuck with me over the years because there were so many examples of prejudice. An example of this is during Tom Robinsons trial. Tom was a black man accused of raping a white woman, a crime that is punishable by the death penalty. Even though all the facts proved that he didn't do it, the jury still found him guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt". Tom's life has been sacrificed to racism by the people who were there to protect him. The justice system didn't allow this man to have a fair trial because of the color of his skin. They disregarded his credibility or that of the other witnesses, all they could focus on was his race because that was all the window let them see. This situation brought about sadness and fear. It sadden me to see something like this happen and brought a sense of fear because man of color are more likely to be falsely accused of a crime. In order for true justice to be served, the jury and the justice system needs to change their outlook on people of color.

  1. I remember watching that movie as well. It really left an impact on my heart. I feel it is so unfair that people are treated so cruel based on the color of their skin. And it's really scary when it comes to crimes and their lives are at stake. I have always tried to treat everyone equally and not just anyone. We all have our flaws and they have nothing to do with our skin!

  2. Hi Temeka,

I recall reading this book. This was a very sad situation and it is unfortunate that the justice system is unfair at times. It is sad that many people have been wrongfully accused because of their skin color and have lost out on many years of their life. This issue has angered me and saddened me at the same time.
    Thanks for sharing your experience.

  3. Temeka,
It seems that even though our society has advanced in many ways, the scars of slavery still remain today. Maybe the only way to change the future is to teach our next generation, the children, the importance of tolerance and love.

  4. It’s a sad but true reality that racism directly impacts our Criminal Justice system among other aspects of our lives. We live in a country that value one’s personal rights such as freedom of speech, separation between religion and state, and one right to remain innocent until proven guilty. Amazingly these values are continuously disregarded when racisms and discrimination takes precedence and control. The values established by our fore founders should be upheld for everyone regardless of one’s race, gender, age, ability, or sexual orientation. These rights were established to protect our country and its human population from the unfortunate effects of inequality.
