Exploring Roles in the ECE Community

When I begin my school for under privilege preschool children, I would like to partner with many organizations that my school currently works with or that I currently work with. One organization that I currently work with is the B Natural Academy of Music and Arts. I like this organization because I know the people working there hold children at the forefront. It would be beneficial for the students because it gives them an opportunity to do something that they normally wouldn’t be able to do. Music and arts requires memorization. Children improve their overall memory when trying to remember steps and/or notes. Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas. Another community of practice that appealed to me is, united way. We focus on some of the same things, which are education, income stability, and health. They also offer a mentor program for African American and Latino boys. This organization also works towards ending homelessness. My last community of practice I would choose is social services; they provide vouchers for parents, so their children are able to receive child care. The organization also offers EBT, Medicare, and emergency utility assistance.

Two job opportunities that interest me are instructional coordinator for pre-k and early childhood professor. A program administrator is the individual responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating an early care and education program. I would need to get a certification or licensure in school administration. I would also need a master’s degree and five years of teaching experience. Professors develop a curriculum for their course and ensure that it meets college and department standards and conduct research and experiments to advance knowledge in their field.  In order to teach at a two year college I would need to have my masters as well as teaching experience. If I chose to teach at a four year college or university I need to have a doctoral degree.

  1. Temeka,
Incorporating the arts into a preschool program of any sort is so important. You pointed out some benefits related to increasing childrens academic skills through music. B Natural Academy for Music and Arts..what a great name !
I share the same interest with you in teaching on the college level. I think it is part of our responsibility as early childhood professionals to help others enter the field and be prepared for this important work.
    Thank you for sharing,

  2. Hi Temeka, I support your vision of opening a school for privilege preschool children. You will be giving every child an opportunity to a quality early education. The partners you have chosen in your community are great resources to support the children and families’ needs. I’ve always been a support of the United Way. They are a great organization to provide quality resources to the people in the community. I can envision your school being a wonderful asset to your community, good luck.

    Thanks,
    Andrea

  3. Hi Temeka,
I love what you are doingg with the arts and children, unfortunatly in most early childhood programs the funds are cut for these purposes and children are missing out on such important creative learning experiences.Good luck I know you will do a wonderful job.

  4. I enjoyed reading your blog Temeka. Arts and music are so vital to a children's development and yet these are the first components of an educational curriculum to be cut. You have developed some inspiring goals Temeka. I wish you luck in your program. Children and families need people like you to be advocating for music and arts!

  5. Hello Temeka,
It is great that you found organizations around your community to bring support services that maybe you could not fully provide to the children you serve. You share an understanding with organizations that make your community families stronger. Kudos on your school for all the support it gives under privileged children.

  6. Temeka,
I totally agree with you about the importance of music for children's healthy development. My son who has an autism diagnosis is lucky enough to have music therapy at his school and it has made an amazing positive impact on him. I loved your post, thanks for sharing!
