My Roots
(Telora Thatch- Mother) My mother is a very outgoing person who is devoted to the mentally, spiritual, and physical growth of all of those around her. My mother has always encouraged me to do what is right in the eye of God and not man. She never allowed me to run with the crowds which I’m thankful for because most of my classmates and childhood friends are either dead, in prison, or have several children with little education. As a child I was able to try a variety of activities such as dance, basketball, girl scouts, choir, and many more. I’m grateful that because till these day I still love to dance.
(Thelma Wright- Grandmother) My grandmother has always told me that my job is to be a young lady and get my education. She has taken me along on many trips traveling to varies places like FL, TX, MI, CA, and many more. At a young age I was able to see many parts of the USA, I believe this is where my love from traveling comes from.
(Aunt Von) My Aunt Von is what we today call Ol School. If you are around her you are expected to say ma’am and sir. She is an advocate for education. Before I attended school she would care for me. I remember learning my alphabets, numbers, personal information like my address, phones number, etc., personal hygiene, and many more things that aided in my success. I can also remember when I first started school I did not know how to tie my shoe, one evening when we went over she made me sit at the table and practice tying my shoe. I couldn’t get up until I learned how to do so. I was upset at the time because I was missing my show but that was my motivation to learn so in less than 5 minutes I had shoe tying down packed!

ReplyDeleteIt looks like our mom's both had a good spiritual basis for raising us. My mother showed me a life based on living for Christ and for that I'm eternally grateful. It sounds like your mom accomplished her goal in raising a well-rounded, morally upstanding young lady!
My grandma, like yours, supported my education as a priority in life! My grandma, even now, encourages education by supporting my daughter by paying for a portion of her preschool tuition!! Gotta love those grandmas!!
It makes me smile as you are able to remember the care that your Aunt Von gave to you when you were very young. As a stay-at-home mom, it is these things that I hope my children remember about their time at home with me! :)
Nice job!
Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI really admire your grandmother and aunt, they had such a great attitude towards raising children. Coming from a military family we are do things kind of old school and it's wonderful to hear we aren't the only ones!
The way your aunt taught you how to tie your shoes is so neat! I've started teaching 2nd - 3rd graders and it didn't take long to learn if you make chores a game or competition they are all over it! Sounds like your aunt knew this trick as well :)
Thank you!
Trish
Hi Temeka,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your story becuase your mother supported you in every way that she could. It is great to her that she embraced all of your qualitaties and the fact that you still enjoy dancing is great.
Hi Temeka,
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you had great supporters around when you were a child especially when considering the outcomes of your friends and classmates.
I think helping our children to pursue education and various experiences is a great way of showing love.
It must be great for them to see their support is still having good influence on you!

It sounds like your mother provided you with a lot of different activities. I remember my Aunt Ruby teaching me how to tie my shoes as a little girl. She passed away recently and I will be attending her funeral services on Monday! She was a great lady and I will miss her. Its nice that you were able to learn so much from your aunt and that she cared so much about you! My parents have taken my children on several trips, so I can appreciate your grandma taking you places. They will cherish those memories for a lifetime as I am sure you have also! Thanks for sharing.
