My Personal Blog

Favorite Book
Ø  My favorite children’s book is none other than “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. I love the book because children are always engaged in the story whenever I read it.  I also enjoy this particular story because it’s a story about being brave and not giving up! Sam-I-Am never stopped pushing the unnamed character to try green eggs and ham. I believe the unnamed character was afraid to try something new but once he tried it he found that he actually loved green eggs and ham. I use the story to encourage my students to be brave and try new things after all life is all about being brave and taking chances!
Story of a child that touched my heart
Ø  During my social welfare class we had to read a book entitled “A Child Called It” by Dave Pelzer, this has been by far the most touching story I’ve ever heard. Dave talks about his childhood and dealing with life’s challenges. During his childhood, Dave was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. Dave’s is ultimately rescued on March 5, 1973 when school staff called the police. This part moved me because it was a Teacher that reported the case!! We never know just how big of an impact we can have on a child’s life! It is vital that we as educators and administrators to our part and do it with much joy in our hearts!

Ø  “It takes a village to raise a child”. The African proverb teaches everlasting truth. It does indeed take a village, to raise a child. Over the years I feel that who have lost sight of this rich proverb. What happen to the days when it was okay to correct a child when you see they doing, regardless if they’re yours a not? That single guardian needs your help, its extremely difficult bringing up children by yourself, so why not lead that helping hand? If we want that kind of support, the place to begin is with ourselves. We must decide to get back to a place of your child is my child and build up children of integrity and self worth, helping them where they fall short mentally, physically, and emotionally

My intake
Ø  I feel that an educator is the most precious resource our country has; of all the jobs in this country, none of them would be possible without teachers. Educating children severely affects their lives and it also influences the lives of anyone who comes into contact with those children. Education provides an establishment for a child to base the rest of his or her life on. Without a sound education, it becomes impossible for an individual to provide for themselves and their families. Education is very important and is a lifelong process. Teachers should feel the fulfillment when the students have obtained the knowledge that they have taught them. Passion is the reason that I am going into the teaching field.

  1. Hi, Temeka!

I love Dr. Seuss and "Green Eggs and Ham" was one of my daughter's favorite books when she was little. I think we read it every night for months! :)

"A Child Called It" was one book that I had heard a lot about during my undergraduate studies, but never had the time to read it. Child abuse is one thing that I will never understand. As a mom, I do get frustrated with my own children, but never do I ever feel the need to hurt them! When I see these stories on the news, my heart breaks for these children and for my many friends who are not able to have children. They would give anything to be able to love any one of these children! I think child abuse is one thing that I think we will never be able to comprehend in this lifetime.

It certainly takes a village to raise a child! I like that saying. My parents used to live just a few doors down from us and would stop by every couple days to play with our kids and help us out with them. In June, they opted to move from NY back to KY and they are now 12 hours away. It has been hard losing them as a support system, but I have been amazed at our friends who have rallied around us to be sure we had that support we needed! Our village is comprised of more friends than family!

I can sense your passion for children and teaching and completely agree with your thoughts about education affecting every area of our nation. You will be a great teacher!

    Nice job!

  2. Hello Temeka

I totally agree with you on the proverb "It takes a village" I feel that in todays fast passed envirment alot of people would rather not get involved. I see students falling through the cracks. Students intoday world need to be active participants in learning.

  3. I love how you related your favorite children's book "Green Eggs and Ham" to the life leasson of being brave and not giving up. This is a nice way to relay that message to children. Often children need to be reminded that it is ok to step out of their "comfort zone" and try new things. I like that you chose this book because the book can be used to relay the underlying message to children and adults. This is truely a book for all ages!!

  6. It is so good to derive satisfaction from your endeavours that you are able to conclude that you're fulfilling your purpose for living.
Life indeed is meaningless if it is not for the service of others. I am praying that my life will have significant impact too.
